TAPLEJUNG, May 14: Rupa Limbu of Taplejung's Fungling Municipality ward-10, works as a laborer and earns Rs 200 per day. While male laborers are paid Rs 400 on a daily basis for labor, women are paid only half of the amount. "We should all get paid as per our capabilities not on the basis of our gender," says Limbu.

As the laborers working in various parts of Taplejung are not receiving the same pay for their work, Limbu along with other women leaders have been raising their voice in this issue. She has been supporting hundreds of laborers like her to demand equal pay for same work.

"Those who are doing the same work should be provided with equal pay regardless of their gender," she said. Meanwhile, fifty-five years old Sitarani Furumbo has made a decision to quit working as a laborer if they do not get equal pay. According to her, males and females should receive equal payment in all kinds of works.

Saraswati Dahal Chettri who works in Mayam Secondary School, expressed her disappointment toward the discrimination between males and females in terms of paying wage and salaries. According to her, it's very demoralizing for women to get low pay in comparison to men for doing the same work.

After hearing about the campaign for equal pay launched by Women Entrepreneurs Association of Nepal (WEAN) ten months ago, most of the women are determined not to work for those who don't ensure equal pay for both genders.
