Women journalists take up photo/video journalism

KATHMANDU, Nov 3:​ Three-day training on photo and video journalism was held from 29-31st October at Hotel Reader’s Inn, Sinamangal. MAG (Media Advocacy Nepal and  Fes (Friedrich Ebert Stiftung) Nepal  organized the event which saw participation form 25 women journalists  from print, online, TV and radios across nine districts of Nepal. 

Senior photojournalist, Bikash Rauniyar discussed on the contents and elements of still photography. Starting with the basics he also mentioned   the technical and thematic aspects of photography. Meanwhile, data journalist Arun Karki shed light on mobile and multimedia Journalism. The session focused on equipment handling, video editing and methods on conducting mobile journalism.

Senior journalist Dev Prakash Tripathi elaborated on the types of video making, the contents and instructions that should be looked into while making short videos accordingly. Each session was followed by group discussions and interactions among participants which helped in specifying various concerns regarding technology and look out for possible solutions. 

“The trainings that we have conducted especially educate and empower women journalists from various districts of Nepal”, said senior journalist and program facilitator, Babita Basnet. “The agenda behind this training is to help understand the technical medium of delivering news and developing skills on photography and video journalism,” she added.

“The need for women journalists in online, photo and video journalism is equally felt as compared to other forms of journalism. Therefore, the training aimed at encouraging women in these spheres”, said President at Media Advocacy Group, Anita Bindu.

The training has instilled newer skills and knowledge that I was yet unaware of as a visual editor myself,” said one of the trainees, Bhawani Dulal.
