LAHAN, June 25: A woman from Lahan, who was being held by police on the charge of stealing a mobile phone, was found hanging in the police station  Sunday. Sumandevi Thakur, who was arrested by police in Lahan on Saturday, was found  hanging with her own sari in the toilet of Area Police Office, Maheshwari.

Acting on a tip off, police had arrested her from a shop where she had gone to sell the mobile  phone in question. When police contacted Laxman Thakur, the husband of the deceased, he  stated that his wife had been repeatedly arrested for theft.

As there was no separate room for female inmates at the local  jail, Sumandevi was transferred to APO Maheshwori . She was being held with another woman, Goma Adhikari, who was arrested on the charge of bank fraud, according to SP Uma Prasad Chaturdevi.

As per the police records, Sumandevi was arrested in a similar case three months ago but was released on bail. On Sunday, after asking for tea, Sumandevi  had gone to the toilet.

When she did not come out after 10 minutes, they broke down the toilet door and found her hanging. She is reported to have tied her sari to the ventilator to hang herself .

Police sent the body for postmortem after preparing a file on  the case .

The  body was later handed over to the dead woman’s husband.
