MORANG, May 11: Police have arrested a woman in possession of counterfeit Nepali currency from Dohamana Bazar located in Rangeli Municipality-9.

Kuresa Khatun, 40, of Takuwa, Sunavarshi Municipality-5 was arrested with fake Nepali notes, according to Morang Police.

A total of 18 fake notes of denomination of Rs 500 were recovered from Khatun. Police said that two other men who were with her managed to flee.

Two unidentified men, including Khatun, came to Dohamana open-air market on Thursday to purchase goats. Sukurmuni Santhal Soren of Rangeli-9 had brought her home-raised goats and sheep to the market for sale.

Khatun and two individuals on a motorcycle bought two goats from Soren for Rs 12,000. According to police, they handed over three notes of denomination Rs 1000 and 18 notes of denomination Rs 500 notes as payment.

Soren suspected the notes were fake. "We are actively pursuing the absconding individuals. While the two men managed to flee with the goats, Khatun, who was in their company, was apprehended by the police as she attempted to escape,” said police.

Upon inspection, the notes were found to be fake and all bearing the same serial number. DSP Basnet said that even the Biratnagar-based Rastra Bank has confirmed that the notes are fake.

It is suspected that the absconding individuals, who fled with the goats, may be Indian nationals. Khatun's involvement in facilitating their escape was also uncovered.

Police disclosed that legal proceedings against Khatun for currency-related offenses are underway, with the court granting an extension for further investigation.
