With more than 100 people dying of COVID-19 in six days, Nepal’s COVID-19 death tally goes past 800

Kathmandu Valley alone reported 282 deaths due to COVID-19

KATHMANDU, Oct 22: Nepal reported 21 more fatalities linked to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on Friday.With this, the country’s coronavirus death toll has soared to 812 since the first death case was reported on May 16.

According to the updates released by the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), it took just six days to add 100 more fatalities to the COVID-19 tally. The country recorded the 700th death on October 16.

The first case of death due to COVID-19 infection was reported when a 29-year-old woman from Sindhupalchowk district died of COVID-19. The number of people dying of COVID-19 surpassed 100 on August 15.

Then the death tally doubled within the next 14 days. The death tally hit 300 in the following nine days on September 7. The number touched 401 on September 19 and 509 on October 1 and soared to 600 with 10 new deaths on October 9.

Nepal reported 26 COVID-19-related deaths-- the highest number of fatalities in a single day so far-- on October 21. As of Thursday afternoon, Nepal’s COVID-19 mortality rate stands at 0.54 percent of the 148,509 total infections confirmed.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, the worst-affected province due to COVID-19 is Bagmati where 378 people including a Chinese national have succumbed to this disease so far. The province that has recorded the least number of COVID-19 related deaths due to this viral infection so far is Karnali with only 10 deaths linked to this disease reported so far.

As many as 149 lives were claimed by the disease in Province 2, while 115 in Lumbini and 104 others in Province 1 died of this disease. Similarly, death tally in Gandaki Province stands at 40 and Sudur Paschim Province 16 as of Wednesday.

The Kathmandu Valley, where Nepal’s federal capital city lies, has so far recorded 282 fatalities – 180 in Kathmandu, 49 in Bhaktapur and 53 in Lalitpur districts.

Nepal first reported COVID-19 infection on January 23. The country so far has registered a total of 148,509 cases of which 102,820 have recovered so far.
