Will there be Rato Machhindranath's chariot procession?
Rato Machhindranath or Karunamaya is the god of grain and rain, where Rato Macchindranath or Bungadya's Jatra is considered as a living culture, which is celebrated by Buddhists, Hindus, Vaishnavites and Shaivites (Nath sects) alike.
The annual chariot procession begins in the month of Baishak on Shukla Pakshyapada till Asar Shukla Chauthi, for around two months. The length (height) of Machhindranath’s chariot is 48 feet, made of wood and cane. The chariots are constructed with wooden frames without using any nails at Pulchowk.
This year due to the outbreak of COVID-19 the festivity was halted. However, the construction work of the chariot began on July 26. Nevertheless, the meeting at District Administration Office, Lalitpur held on Tuesday made a decision not to conduct any activities related to Rato Machhindranath chariot festival.
