YoungInnovations is a technology company established in 2007. It is a special type of technological company which specializes in global development by building partnerships with development organizations to create a bigger impact.

In conversation with Republica’s Prasansha Rimal, Bibhusan Bista, CEO of YoungInnovations since 2009, talks about the company and the changes needed to bring technological revolution in Nepal.

Tell us about YoungInnovations?

YoungInnovations is a software company which focuses on developing software applications for development sector and national governments. We have projects in six different countries intersecting data and governance. We try to make sure that the government data is used to make better decisions. We are currently focusing on procurement transparency by building software and applications that can help governments to create accountable and transparent procurement systems. 

Any innovative works you are doing here for Nepali market?

We launched Development Check, a mobile application in partnership with Integrity Action-UK. This app enables monitoring of infrastructure development projects on the ground. If there is a bridge being constructed in a remote community, people can use that mobile app to inform the government of the progress. We received Google Innovation award for the project implemented in the UK. That app is also being used to monitor earthquake reconstruction in Sindhupalchowk. It is now being used in twelve different countries around the world.

What are some of the ways you approach to solving problems?

Different clients have different needs, so we approach problems differently. One of the ways is through data innovation, everything that we do has a component of data and we want people to take advantage of it. We work with applications and software that can take the data and can build it into something tangible. Another way we approach to a solution is through community innovations, which basically means we try to engage with the community.

We actually try to facilitate the community through data, we have programs where we go to colleges and conduct data boot camp. We also have mobile and software solutions. This approach makes sure that the software and application we create on desktop can be used by an individual in cell phone to make the application or software more accessible and portable. Our fourth approach is technology innovation to solve a problem by inventing a technology which would create greater impact.
