Wave of announcing candidacy though election date not announced yet

KATHMANDU, June 22: Many people have started announcing their candidacies even when the date for the election to the House of Representatives hasn’t been confirmed. The wave of announcing candidacy in Kathmandu and various other districts has started along with the government's preparations to announce the election date by mid-July.

Engineer Aakarshan Pokharel has announced his independent candidacy from Kathmandu Constituency No. 4. He announced his candidacy on an open road near Kapan Sat-talle. General Secretary of Nepali Congress Gagan Kumar Thapa is a member of parliament from Kathmandu-4.

Pokharel announced his independent candidacy challenging Thapa who has been a member of parliament since 2008. Singer Manas Raj who went to support Pokharel said that the country demands change which begins from Pokharel’s independent candidacy. Harisharan Lamichhane has stated that he will file his candidacy from Kathmandu-3. He worked for Radio Nepal for a long time.

Various independent candidates along with Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), are engaged in the home work of announcing their candidacies in the upcoming elections to the House of Representatives against former General Secretary of Nepali Congress, Prakash Man Singh. While various sections of society are contesting for candidacy, Pukar Bam from Bibeksheel and Shobhit Upreti from the RPP will file their candidacies from Kathmandu-1, which has been Singh’s constituency.

When a group from his own party was seen opposing Singh, they had given candidacy to his wife Srijana Singh in the local level election on May 13. But he failed to get the result in his favor. While it is estimated that there will be non-cooperation within the party in the upcoming election, major opponent UML and various independent candidates along with RPP are preparing for candidacy in that particular area.

Singh was elected with 10,936 votes in the 2017 election. His closest rival Rabindra Mishra from the then Sajha Party had got 10,118 votes. Suman Sayami, who had received good votes for Kathmandu Metropolitan City in the local level election will also file his candidacy in the federal election from Kathmandu-8.

Ranju Darshana from Bibeksheel Sajha Party has announced her candidacy from Kathmandu Constituency No.5 in the election to the House of Representatives. Singer Sanjay Shrestha has announced his candidacy from Kathmandu Constituency No. 6. 

Manushi Bhattarai, daughter of former prime minister Baburam Bhattarai has also announced her candidacy from Kathmandu. She is preparing for her candidacy from Kathmandu-5 or 8 from the Janata Samajbadi Party.

Film Director Manoj Pandit has announced his candidacy for the federal election from Kavre-2. He said that he will run against former Minister Gokul Baskota. Dipesh KC has stated to file his candidacy from Lalitpur-2.
