According to District Police Office, 18 doors of the barrage, which can hold up to 800,000 cusec of water, have been opened after the water level rose. In case of further rise in the water level, other doors will also be opened, said Chief District Officer Chudamuni Sharma.
The monsoon rains in the hilly areas have led to the constant rise in the water level in the river for the past two days. In the past, the water level rose only during July- August.
Areas around the eastern embankment are facing erosion and have been declared vulnerable zones.
Home Sectary Leela Mani Paudyal, IGP of Armed Force Police Shanta Kumar Basnet and IGP of Nepal Police Rabindra Pratap Shah inspected Prakashpur- Rajawas area of the eastern embankment. They were in Biratnagar to participate in the Eastern Regional Review meeting.
Paudyal has given strict instructions to both the Indian and Nepali engineers to immediately take measures for repair and protection of the embankments. He said that if the problem is not immediately addressed the consequences could be grave.
