ITAHARI, June 21: The water level in the Saptakoshi River has increased significantly due to the incessant rainfall in Eastern region since Monday night.

The water level at the river was 126,230 cusec this morning and it is rising every passing hour.

21 sluice gates out of 56 at the barrage have been opened following increase in the water level.

Two waning lights will glow at the barrage if the water level crosses 150,000 cusec and three warning lights if the water level crosses 950,000 cusec.

On August 18, 2008, the river had damaged the eastern dam and had inundated three VDCs on Nepal side when the water level was only 168,000 cusec.

Over 7000 families were displaced by the flood.

People in the area are still leaving in a fear that the river could damage the dam again risking their lives.
