SARLAHI, Oct 16: The ward chief of Lalbandi Municipality-17 has donated his salary to the squatters so as to help them celebrate the Dashain festival.

Nawaraj Adhikari, ward chief of Lalbandi-17, has provided rice and other food items to some squatters' families so as to help them celebrate their greatest festival Dashain. The squatters living in Nayabasti near Manakamana Community Forest were elated after being handed over the rice and money amid a function organized on Sunday.

According to ward chief Adhikari, this small help will bring smiles to the faces of the squatters who earn their living by crushing stones on the river side. Speaking at the function, he announced, "I have decided to donate my salary and allowances and offer other kinds of help for the welfare of the squatters, destitute students and old age people." He assured that he will be providing sweaters to the students from destitute families in winter and will also provide some help to the old age home of Jutpati.

Informing that he was successful in convincing the ward office for providing some land each to 36 squatters' families after the elections, Adhikari said he didn't want them to celebrate their Dashain amid scarcity like in the past. Therefore, he offered rice and Rs 1,000 to the 15 squatter families who have already built their homes on the land provided by the ward office.

"During the elections, I had promised them that I will make efforts to make their lives better," said Adhikari, adding, "They trusted me and made me victorious. So, I am trying to do what I promised."He assured that he would continue helping these families in the future as well. Santamaya BK, who received a sack of rice and Rs 1000, stated that she is grateful to ward chief Adhikari for his help and concern. "His little help is a great relief for us," said Santamaya.Caption: Ward chief of Lalbandi Municipality-17, Nawaraj Adhikari speaking at a function.
