KATHMANDU, Nov 28: Voting to elect the new executive committee of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) is currently underway in three different places in Kathmandu.

Over a thousand delegates are casting their votes to elect the new executive committee of the umbrella organizations of the business community across the country.

According to the election committee of the FNCCI, 119 candidates are vying for a post in the executive committee including the senior vice president, three vice presidents and 43 executive committee members.

Keeping in view the risk of coronavirus infection, the FNCCI has set three election venues at Nepal Academy in Kamaladi, Karki Banquet in Babarmahal and FNCCI’s head office in Teku.

The voting that began at 8 am will close at 4 pm, according to the election committee.

As the incumbent senior vice president automatically gets elected as the President of the FNCCI, senior vice president Shekhar Golchha will now head the FNCCI and succeed President Bhawani Rana.

Vice president (Industry/Commerce) Kishore Kumar Pradhan and another vice president (Association) Chandra Prasad Dhakal are contesting the election to become the upcoming senior vice president, and replace Golchha as the next president.

They have jumped into the fray by forming their own panel.

Supporters of both panels have gathered in front of the election venue canvassing for votes for their candidates.  While most of the delegates are wearing face masks, they are not seen following social distancing measures.

All candidates including Pradhan and Dhakal are visiting election venues and making last-ditch efforts to persuade voters to vote for them.

The Election committee has said that they have followed the health safety protocols to conduct the voting.

According to the election committee, the vote counting will begin immediately after the election is closed.
