KATHMANDU, Jan 8: Clause-wise discussion on the voters roll bill began at the state affairs committee of the Legislature-Parliament today.

Majority of the members taking part in the discussion suggested that the bill ensure a mandatory provision for voter identity card to ensure free and fair elections. They also suggested maintaining Chaitra end (mid-April) as the cutoff date for collection of voters list.

Some members however suggested adopting the national identity card that would serve all the purpose, including elections.

Suggestions were also received to giving gender equality special emphasis while compiling the voters list and facilitating post-marriage voter registration for women.

Meanwhile, the Committee has decided to speed up the deliberations on the bills relating to elections considering the need to complete all three tiers' elections within January 2018.

MPs Ananda Prasad Dhungana, Rameswar Phuyal, Guru Barlakoti among others gave their suggestions on the voter roll bill at the meeting today. RSS
