Virginia lawmakers support proposal to celebrate Buddha Jayanti as International Meditation Day

KATHMANDU, Feb 20: Virginia's lawmakers have agreed to a proposal to support Buddha Jayanti as the International Meditation Day. The announcement to celebrate the full moon day of May as International Meditation Day was made with initiation by Bodhisattva Swami Anand Arun, the founder and coordinator of Osho Tapoban.

The Nepali community of Osho Committee of America had proposed to celebrate International Meditation Day coinciding with the Birth Anniversary of Lord Gautama Buddha. Swami Anand Arun, Board of Supervisor Chair of Loudoun county of Virginia Phyllis J. Randall, 87 District Delegate of Virginia House of Delegates John J.Bell, 33 District Representative of Virginia Senate Jennifer Boysko remarked that reorganization of International Meditation Day as per American legislation was a big achievement.


With this historic announcement, the full moon day of May will be now celebrated as International Meditation Day. The announcement was made to celebrate International Meditation Day as meditation plays an important role in human health and establishment peace.

For the historic announcement, Nepalis in USA, Osho followers Subarna Pant and Hari Sharma had facilitated discussions between Bodhisattva Swami Anand Arun and American officials.

The full moon day of May, which is also recognized by the United Nations as Vesak Day, marks the day Buddha was born, attained Enlightenment and passed away was chosen as the International Meditation Day.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) formally recognizes health benefits of meditation in reducing chronic pain, high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, Ulcerative colitis, anxiety, depression and insomnia.



Meditation practice as prescribed by numerous board-certified medical professionals and recognized by leading science and medical journals to promote physical. mental, emotional and overall sense of wellbeing: relieves suffering, reduce stress, suicidal and violent tendencies; assist to overcome addictions, loneliness thus improving sell respect and stability; Improve cognitive functions, peace of mind, relationships, social bonding and life contentment.
