KATHMANDU, May 25: The garbage littering Kathmandu streets will be picked up from Tuesday as talks between the government and protesting Okharpauwa residents became successful on Monday. Kathmandu was stinking with garbage for a week after Okharpauwa residents obstructed dumping of garbage at Sisdol landfill site to press various demands.

The locals, Kathmandu Municipality and the Department of Waste Management have created an Environment Sub Committee to deal with the current set of problems. The president of the committee is Shyam Sundar Balami, local leader from Okharpauwa associated with Rastriya Janashakti Party.

“It should take 5 days to clean up the garbage,” says Niranjan Paudyal of Kathmandu Municipality, Environment Division.

The current agreement has been reached after Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal ordered government secretaries to deal with the current garbage problems with priority.

While the current problem has been resolved, Niranjan Paudyal says that the agreement reached on Monday was with just one group of Okharpauwa residents and that the problem may resurface anytime.
