Vaccine against COVID-19 to be provided to children aged 5 to 11 years from June 23

KATHMANDU, June 20: For the first time in Nepal, a vaccine against COVID-19 arrived on Sunday that can be administered to children aged below 11. With American aid, 2.2 million doses of the vaccine arrived in Nepal from America on Sunday. Pfizer vaccine 9 BioNTech vaccine pediatric has arrived in Nepal.

Surendra Chaurasia, chief of the Logistics Management Section of the Department of Health Services, said that the required 200,000 vial solvent had arrived in Nepal two days before. The Covax facility has made vaccines available in Nepal considering its significant progress in vaccination against coronavirus, said  Sagar Dahal, chief of the Vaccination Section. The US government has provided vaccines under the Covax facility. Before, the Nepal government was preparing to purchase vaccines against COVID-19 for children.

According to the Vaccine Storage Branch, the vaccines that arrived from America on Sunday were sent to all seven provinces on the same day. According to the Family Welfare Division, the government will conduct vaccination for 19,000 children from June 23 to 29 in 27 districts in the first phase. The vaccine will be applied from July 18-24 to those who have received their first dose.

Dahal said that a vaccination campaign will be conducted in August for the remaining children for which free COVID-19 vaccines will arrive from America. “America has said that it will send the vaccines before the start of the vaccination campaign,” he said.  

According to the Vaccination Branch, the first phase of the vaccination campaign will be conducted in 27 districts that are Siraha, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Saptari, Parsa, Sindhuli, Kavrepalanchok, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kathmandu Chitwan, Kaski, Baglung, Eastern Nawalparasi, Western Nawalparasi, Rupandehi, Kapilvastu, Dang, Banke, Bardiya, Surkhet, Kailali, Kanchanpur and Dadeldhura.
