DHARAN, Dec 1: A group of women  encircled the Area Police Office, Dharan, and chanted slogans against the police on Friday, following the death of one Usha Rai of Dharan-13 over a month after she was beaten up by a group of women led by one Urmila Rai on October 20.

The women surrounded the police office and chanted slogans demanding that all those involved in the assault be arrested. Women from the neighborhood of the deceased and other wards gathered at the police station and chanted slogans.

There is no agreement on the post-mortem of the deceased. They have also demanded that the husband of the main accused Urmila Rai should be arrested. After the death of Usha Rai on Tuesday during treatment, the women said to be involved in the incident are absconding. Among them, the main accused, Urmila Rai, has been arrested by the police. However, the protesting women have demanded that others involved in the incident be arrested.

On October 20, a group of women led by Urmila Rai attacked and beat up Usha on the charge of “seducing” her husband. The family members said that Usha was forcefully fed a mixture of various chemicals and chili powder at that time, which seriously affected her health.

Usha lived with her two daughters. Her husband died about two years ago. She was making a living by sewing clothes. Initially, she lived in the main accused Urmila's house. Only about five months ago she moved to Dharan-13 Surya Marga.

Usha was taken to BP Institute for treatment after being beaten up. When she was discharged from the hospital, her attackers paid for her treatment on October 25 and reconciliation was reached between the two sides.

She was admitted to the BP Koirala Institute of Health sciences for treatment last week after her health deteriorated. After her death during treatment in the ICU, the family filed a complaint against Urmila Rai and those involved in the beating.
