KATHMANDU, July 27: The US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu is arriving in Kathmandu on Thursday on a two-day visit to Nepal.
During his stay in Kathmandu, Assistant Secretary Lu is scheduled to hold meetings with Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and Foreign Minister Dr Narayan Khadka. According to diplomatic sources, Lu does not have any prior schedule to hold meetings with political party leaders during this visit.
Lu will arrive in Kathmandu on Thursday evening and fly back home on Friday evening.
The visit comes in the wake of Nepal’s parliament ratifying Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact Agreement. The MCA Nepal has already expedited preparatory works of the construction of road and transmission line which are being built with the MCC grant following the ratification.
Lu's visit also coincides with the ongoing debate about State Partnership Program (SPP) in Nepal. A section of political parties have demanded the government to withdraw from the SPP program arguing that this was a part of military strategy.
