Urban Girl’s Young Entrepreneur

As per the national consensus, women’s literacy rate in the country is far less than men. As a result, men are regarded as breadwinners whereas women are confined inside fours wall of a house.

ButNikita Acharya, 24, is different than others. She is a young woman entrepreneur who believes in actions more than on words.Nikitafelt the necessity of e-shopping in Nepal while pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Katmandu College of Management, Gwarko. She was 19 years old then.

“We did not have any online shopping sites at that time. Therefore, I shared the idea of establishing such a site with co-founder Kiran Timisina who had IT background. As a result, the project kicked off asUrban Girl in 2012 with Rs10,000 in pocket and 200 square feetof workspace. But after five years, we have over 38 staff in a team and altogether three buildings: Headquarter at Minbhawan, Cake factory of Old Baneshwor and store at Durbarmarg” said by Nikita.

“Most of people just dream but only a few follow those dreams. I chased my dreams. Today I can proudly say that I’m a woman CEO in Nepal.

At that time, I was scared to share my dreams even with my parents. They only found out when they read about it in a magazine after three months of Urban Girl’s establishment.”

Nikita believes in turning risks into opportunities as a businessperson. But according to her, women take lesser risks than men and they always try to please others. As a result, there is less participation of women in the business sector. Hence, she as a Global Ambassador of Nepal at Women’s Entrepreneurship Day, associated with Urban Girl organized the Walkathon from Labim Mall to Patan Durbar Squareto empower the Nepali women in Nepali industry world.

To honor her determination and hard work in the field, Nikita was honored the Best Start Up by New Business Age Magazine in 2017.Besides her business, she has also participated in different college activities as a motivational speakerand a panelist. Nikita is also one of the panelist of Hult Business Prize which is a partnership between the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) and Hult International Business School.

She is currently planning to expand the business  outside the valley as well as in the international market. Nikita shared that the only problem of the online business is unhealthy competetion which is problem of  having fake online pages. Overall, everything is ok in online buisness.

Likewise, she believes that smartness is the guru mantra for being a successful businessperson- “If you know when to switch and when to quit, your business will boom. Just like the Amazon online store which started their business as a book seller, but later it started selling everything. This has clicked my mind,” she said.
