Update: Two killed, over 100 injured in massive storm in Kailali, Kanchanpur

DHANGADHI, June 7: Two people have died while more than 100 sustained injuries when a massive storm hit Kailali and Kanchanpur districts last night. 

The deceased have been identified as Bir Bahadur Chaudhary of Godavari Municipality-4 and Lahanu Dangaura of Tikapur Municipality-2. The storm has caused massive damage to several houses, roads and other physical infrastructures.

Dagaura, 47, died when the storm destroyed a poultry farm at Tikapur municipality-2, said Police Inspector at the District Police Office, Prakash Dangi. Similarly, motorcyclist Chaurdhary died when the motorcycle (Se 21 Pa 5821) he was riding collided with a tipper at Godawari municipality-8 in Kailali district at a time when storm was taking place.

He said that some 76 people were injured at different places of Kailali district when zinc sheet blown by storm as well as trees and electric poles, uprooted following the storm, hit them.

Of the injured, Janak Malla, Gautam Malla of Godawari municipality, Sarita Joshi and Siknata Chaurdhary of Dhangadhi were critically injured. Janak and Gautam are receiving treatment at Seti Zonal Hospital while Joshi and Chaudhary have been recommended to take India for further treatment. Other remaining 72 injured are undergoing treatment at Seti Zonal Hospital and private health institutions, said police.

The power supply has been disrupted as well as vehicular movement has also been obstructed at some places in Kailali district as electric poles and trees were uprooted following the storm. Teams from Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police were mobilized immediately to rescue the injured and those trapped in the storm. Meanwhile, in Kanchanpur district, 23 people were injured at Bedkot municipality and Bhimdutta municipality of Kanchanpur district due to the storm.

Of the injured, eight are undergoing treatment at Seti Zonal Hospital, Kailali and one of them is critically injured. Deputy Superintendent of Police at the District Police Office, Kanchanpur, Gyan Bahadur Bista, said that 15 other injured are receiving treatment at Mahakali Zonal Hospital. Similarly, power supply and vehicular movement have been disrupted in many places in the district as storm uprooted the electric poles and trees. Similarly, Daiji-Jogbudha road section of Dadeldhura has also been obstructed. District Temporary Police Post has also suffered damages due to the storm.
