UML’s mayoral and ward committee candidates for capital short-listed

KATHMANDU, April 26: With just six days left for filing the candidacy for the local level elections, the main opposition CPN-UML has short-listed its mayoral and ward committee candidates for various local units in Kathmandu district. 

The party's Province Committee on Wednesday recommended five leaders as the prospective mayoral candidates for Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). Besides a metropolitan city, Kathmandu district has 10 municipalities.

According to UML Central Committee member Surendra Manandhar, the district committee and provincial committee recommended Jeevan Ram Shrestha, Bidya Sundar Shakya, Bidur Mainali, Basanta Manandhar and Kalpana Rijal for the post of Kathmandu mayor. Though the names of some senior party leaders were discussed earlier, the province committee short listed local leaders of the party for the capital city. 

UML Standing Committee will finalize the party's candidates based on the recommendations. “We have recommended the names based on the contribution to the party, clean image and the capacity to materialize the party's visions,” said Manandhar who is also deputy in-charge of UML Kathmandu district. 

Among the recommended leaders, Shrestha is a central committee member and has served as member secretary of the National Sports Council. Bidur Mainali was elected the deputy mayor of KMC in the last local poll held 20 years ago. 

Bidya Sundar Shakya is Kathmandu District Committee secretary of UML and was elected a ward committee chairman in the last local polls. Basanta Manandhar is a former student leader and Kalpana Rijal a leader of the party's women's wing. 

Likewise, Sujita Shakya, Shanti Adhikari, Ratna Gurung, Bidya Neupane, Indira Panta and Shyam Bhandari have been recommended as deputy mayoral candidates for Kathmandu.  

Among the recommended leaders for the post of deputy mayor, Shakya is the party's Central Committee member and wife of party leader Shankar Pokharel. Adhikari is general secretary of All Nepal Women Association and daughter-in-law of former prime minister late Manamohan Adhikari.
Gurung is a former lawmaker while Neupane is the deputy secretary of the party's Kathmandu District Committee. Bhandari is also a former ward chairman and a member of the party's District Committee. Panta is a member of the party's District Committee and a member of the party's Finance and Planning central department. Manandhar, recommended for mayor and Panta, recommended for deputy mayor, are husband and wife. 

UML District Committee has recommended Prahlad Bahadur Karki for Chandragiri,  Ramesh Man Maharjan for Kirtipur and Gunjaman Basnet and Shreeram Acharya for mayoral candidates of Dakshinkali municipalities. 

Likewise, Subarna Shrestha, Sambhu Prasad Dulal have been recommended for Sankharapur municipality, Rishi Ram Phyual, Ram Saran Dhungana and Sarada Dhungel for Kageshwori-Manohara, Punya Prasad Chaulagain and Gopal Baral for Gokarneswor, and Uday Kharel and Mitharam Adhikari for Budhanilkantha municipalities for the post of mayor. 

Similarly, Narayan Bhai Shrestha and Prakash Adhikari have been recommended for Tokha, Shyam Ghimire and Rameshwor Bohara for Tarakeshwor, Prakash Shrestha, Krishnahari Khatri and Devaki Bhattarai as mayor for Nagarjun municipality.
