KATHMANDU, September 3: Chairman of the main opposition party, CPN-UML, KP Sharma Oli skipped a gathering of the UML-affiliated Progressive Professional Lawyers' Association (PPLA) held in Lalitpur on Friday.

Chairman Oli decided to skip the meeting after a section of leaders who were formerly close to the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led faction within the party asked him to halt the gathering of the PPLA. Leaders close to Oli said he had decided to abstain from the gathering after some dispute arose over his participation.

The PPLA gathering was scheduled to begin at 2PM on Friday. Oli was invited as the Chief Guest to the function. However, PPLA Chairman Rudra Nepal earlier issued a circular not to attend the gathering as there was no institutional decision to call the meeting.

UML Standing Committee member Raghuji Panta, who is also in-charge of the PPLA, had separately urged Chairman Oli to halt the gathering. He argued that the gathering was called against the spirit of party unity.
