KATHMANDU, Aug 8: The United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) has demanded with the government to declare an Indian national killed in a clash with police as a martyr.
The UDMF said the government should provide Rs one million in compensation to the family of Ashish Kumar Ram, a local of Raxaul-11, India, who was killed in police action during a clash in Birgunj on November 2 last year.
The demand by UDMF comes at a time when the government has decided to provide Rs one million each to the families of those killed during the Madhes Movement.
“We had been demanding that those killed in Madhes Movement should be declared as martyrs irrespective of their cast, sex and nationality,” said Chairman of Sadhbhawana Party, Rajendra Mahato, “The Indian national should receive the same respect given to other martyrs.”
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), the erstwhile government has already doled out Rs one million each to 41 families and Rs 500,000 each to three families.
The money was distributed to the families of the deceased and the injured being based on the report forwarded by local administrations.
In an attempt to placate UDMF, the government had decided to distribute compensation on recommendations made by the Madhes-based parties. Following the government’s decision, UDMF is preparing a new list of the deceased and the injured.
