KATHMANDU, May 4: The two recipients of the European Union (EU) Award to support the development of coffee sector in Nepal -- ICCO Cooperation and Good Neighbors International Nepal -- jointly launched their respective projects ‘HAMRO COFFEE: Expanding Opportunities for Nepalese Coffee Farmers & Traders’ and ‘Coffee Value Chain Development Project: Coffee Commercialization; Income Diversification’ amid a program in Lalitpur on Wednesday
“The total EU support to HAMRO COFFEE amounts to 500,000 euros with co-financing of 125,000 euros by ICCO Cooperation. Respectively, EU support to Coffee Value Chain Development Project amounts to 499,764 euros with co-financing by Good Neighbours International of 165,500 euros,” the EU said in a statement.
European Union’s support to the Competitiveness of Quality Coffee in Nepal aims to target coffee growers and cooperatives; especially farmers from disadvantaged communities, who would benefit from technical assistance to enhance the competitiveness of organic coffee production, improve the productivity and extend best practices on harvesting and processing.
“This will also help to conduct market study and promotion, including tourism activities in growing areas,” the statement said, adding that this support is a part of the ‘Support for Trade and Economic Capacity Building: Trade and Private Sector Development Program’ launched by the government and the EU in September 2014.
