BIRATNAGAR, Sept 22: Two persons have been arrested for taking patients at the Koshi Zonal Hospital, which receives around 5000 patients everyday, for a ride.

The police arrested Arun Sharma of Biratnagar-11 and Bimala Mukhiya of Katahari, for misleading patients and taking them to private clinics in turn for hefty commissions. [break]

Sharma, who posed as a doctor in the maternity ward in the absence of health workers, has also been accused of making sexual advances to women patients. Mukhiya, on the other hand, has conceded that she received a commission of Rs 300 per patient. “I took Nathuni Rishidev´s wife to Dr KK Singh´s clinic telling her that the hospital was closed for Dashain festival," she said.

The police arrested Sharma acting on a tip-off from Ashok Mandal, a Maoist cadre.

Dr Singh has denied the allegations. Nonetheless, the police have filed a case against him on the basis of Mukhiya´s statement.

Maoist cadre Mandal claimed that ambulance drivers, rickshaw pullers and medical stores are also involved in the racket.

According to the police, the hunt for the ringleader is on. “We will take action against everyone involved in the crime,” Superintendent of Police Devendra Subedi said.
