TU preparing to hold FSU elections on March 19

KATHMANDU, Jan 6: Tribhuvan University (TU) has prepared to hold the elections to free students unions (FSUs) on March 19. 

Earlier, the preparations were to hold the elections on March 12 but the schedule was postponed by a week in consultation with various students’ unions. 

A meeting of the TU Student Welfare Council and Sports Directorate today recommended to the TU Executive Council for conducting the election on the given date. 

Bearing in mind the opinions of the students’ unions and exams and student enrollment schedules, the date was proposed and it is expected to be endorsed by the Council very soon, according to Directorate executive director Prof Pashupati Adhikari. 

FSU elections in TU and its constituent and affiliated campuses have remained suspended for long. According to Prof Adhikari, the TU Executive Council will form the FSU election central monitoring coordination committee. 

Earlier, TU had sat for talks with all students’ unions presidents in regard to determining the election date.  It is said the unions have agreed on this date. It had discussed the matter with TU office-bearers, departments, deans of all nine faculties and the Controller of Examinations.      

TU has 62 constituent and 1,040 affiliated campuses. The age limit (28 years) and a mixed electoral system have been implemented in FSU elections. With the provisions of age limit and mixed electoral system into force, the FSU election was first time organized in TU campuses partially in 2073 BS.
