KATHMANDU, Sept 21: Tribhuvan University (TU) has appointed deans of six faculties for three months against its tradition of appointing deans for four years.
According to the Office of the Vice Chancellor (VC) of TU, the newly appointed deans are Dev Raj Adhikari in the Faculty of Management, Netra Dhital in the Faculty of Education, Ram Prasad Adhikari in the Faculty of Science, Chintamani Pokharel in the Faculty of Humanities, Shyam Jha in the Faculty of Agriculture Science and Krishna Tiwari in the Faculty of Forestry.
Deans used to be appointed for four years in the past. However, they have been appointed for three months this time. It has been criticized that the appointments were made under political pressure as per the power sharing agreement of the political parties.
Professor Achyut Gyawali, the senior most candidate and assistant dean of the Faculty of Forestry, said that the appointment of deans was influenced by political parties and leaders.
“Qualified and competent candidates should have been appointed in academic post of deans instead of political activists,” he added.
TU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Tirtha Raj Khaniya could not deny political influence during appointments of higher posts in the TU. “The political situation may have influenced the decision,” he said. “The appointments should be fair if we want quality education,” he said.
The vice chancellor was appointed from the quota of Nepali Congress while the rector of TU was appointed from the quota of CPN-UML and TU registrar was appointed from the quota of CPN (Maoist Center) some months ago.
