RAUTAHAT, March 21: In order to avoid serious crimes during the festival of Holi, the District Police Office (DPO), Rautahat, tightened security and deployed two trained dogs at the border on Wednesday.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhupendra Khatri, the chief of the DPO, informed Republica that the dogs were brought from Province 3 Police Headquarters in Hetauda to ensure security at Gaur Customs. As the government banned the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) led by Netra Bikram Chand, the latter has intensified criminal activities of late, forcing authorities to beef up security at the border to curb such incidents.

According to the DPO, the Nepal-India border is so crucial that if security is not tight, criminal groups manage to import explosives, weapons, and bullets within the blink of an eye. However, there is always added security at the border during festivals but this is the first time that trained dogs have been deployed here.

SP Khatri stated that these dogs were brought with the objective of assisting the police in security checking to make sure that no illegal or banned goods enter the country through the border. As Nepal and India share a common border, criminal activities are very common at the border.

These two dogs will continue their jobs even after Holi. The officials of the customs office, Gaur have expected that the mobilization of dogs will curb smuggling and will increase revenue collection.
