Tigers are important to make the country known internationally: Madhav Nepal

KATHMANDU, July 29: Former Prime Minister and Chairman of CPN (Unified Socialist) Madhav Kumar Nepal has requested the ministry and the agencies under it to protect tigers. He also suggested rewarding those who are able to do commendable work in the field of tiger conservation

"Tiger is also important to make Nepal known at the international level, so it is necessary to protect it, the forest area should be developed to protect the tiger, the Nature Conservation Fund should also pay attention to this," Chairman Nepal said.

He said that if nature cannot be protected, no animal can be protected. Secretary at the Ministry of Forests and Environment, Pemnarayan Kandel, said that protecting tigers would increase their numbers and also help in environmental protection. He said that a special program has been launched to increase the number of tigers. 

On that occasion, it was informed that the number of tigers in Nepal has reached 355. Before 2010, there were only 121 tigers in Nepal. Director General of National Parks and Wildlife Department, Ramchandra Kandel, said that the number of tigers decreased in 2010, but now it has increased significantly.

Out of nine species of tigers, only three species were extinct in the world. He also informed that according to the commitment made by 13 countries of the world, Nepal has succeeded in doubling. Nepal has been established as a successful country in tiger conserve
