KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Three of the six people killed in a deadly road accident in Abu Dhabi on Thursday were Nepali nationals, the Nepali embassy in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said.

Nepali ambassador to the UAE Krishna Prasad Dhakal said the deceased Nepali nationals have been identified as Krishna Kumari Adhikari of Jhapa (passport number 8572394), Bhawana Kunwar of Pyuthan (passport number 7201819) and Amisha Moktan of Bara (passport number 9678475).

As many as 17 of the total 25 passengers travelling in an ill-fated bus that plowed into the back of a lorry at Al Raha Beach Road on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi were Nepali nationals. Ambassador Dhakal said the remaining 14 injured are currently undergoing treatment at local Mafraq Hospital, NMC Royal Hospital and Al Rahba Hospital.

All the deceased as well as injured women are found to be employees of the Modern Building Maintenance (MBM) Company.

Ambassador Dhakal as well as other officials of the embassy had visited the hospitals shortly after the accident to inquire about the health conditions of the injured Nepal nationals. They met the injured as well as the doctors involved in the treatment to get their health updates. 

A press statement issued by the Nepali embassy said the embassy is working in coordination with local authorities, hospital and MBM Company to make necessary arrangements to send the dead bodies to Nepal.

Local police have attributed careless driving as the cause of the accident. A Gulf News report quoting Abu Dhabi police officials said the main cause of the accident was the reckless behavior of the driver of the car in front of the truck who confused its driver, which led the truck stopping in order to avoid hitting it.

Head of Serious Accidents and Investigation Department at the Traffic Department of External Areas in the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, Major Abdullah Khamis Al Azizi attributed the primary causes of the accident to excessive speed and failure of the bus driver to take into account road conditions, according to the news.
