Recommended modalities include either holding entire elections in Kathmandu or between respective provinces and Kathmandu or e-voting

KATHMANDU, Sept 8: A committee formed by the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) to recommend modalities to convene its election has come up with three possible ways to elect the new leadership of the umbrella organization of the private sector businesses and industries.

According to a report submitted by the six-member committee to the FNCCI President Bhawani Rana, all election programs could be either held entirely in Kathmandu or could be split between provinces and the capital by complying with all health safety measures and protocols issued by the government.

The first option is the regular modality for the election where all delegates throng to the convention venue for voting whereas the second modality will allow the FNCCI to hold its district/municipality level chambers’ election in the respective provinces whereas delegates from commodity, sectoral associations and bi-national chambers will gather in Kathmandu for the voting.

The third modality recommended by the committee is to organize a computerized or electronic voting.

Earlier on August 5, the FNCCI’s executive committee had formed the committee with the mandate to recommend the modalities to hold its 54th General Convention which has been cancelled twice due to COVID-19.

The pandemic and the subsequent prohibitory orders issued by authorities have made the election of the umbrella organization uncertain. On July 25, the FNCCI had decided to cancel its 54th Annual General Meeting and Election scheduled for the second week of August. It had also decided to hold the annual general meeting and election within 15 days of the government approval for organizing public gatherings or assemblies.

Amid lingering uncertainty, FNCCI had formed the committee to come up with possible modalities to hold the general assembly and election.

The committee has suggested to the federation to convene the inaugural, closed-door and closing ceremonies through a webinar.  Based on the consultations with respective ministries, government agencies, COVID-19 High Level Crisis Management Center, the committee has concluded that the FNCCI could opt for one of the three recommended modalities for the voting.

Arun Raj Sumargi, DB Basnet, Binod Dhakal, Sunil Gopal Shrestha, Bharat Raj Acharya and Ranjit Raj Acharya were in the committee.
