42 positions of judges vacant in high courts, 36 in district courts

KATHMANDU, March 1: Not only the Supreme Court but also the high courts are dependent on acting heads in the absence of a Chief Justice and chief judges, respectively.


Six of the seven province high courts have acting chief judges. There are various benches under the high courts. At present, only the High Court Dipayal has a chief judge. All other high courts have acting chief judges.

In the Supreme Court, 42 positions of justices, including the Chief Justice, are vacant. The Judicial Council has not been able to make recommendations for the appointment of judges at the high courts and justices at the Supreme Court for a long time.  


Similarly, 36 positions of judges are vacant in the district courts across the country.  


Four months ago, the Judicial Council chose high court judges Keshav Raj Joshi, Guna Raj Dhungel, Dilliraj Acharya, Pramod Kumar Shrestha Vaidya, Prem Raj Karki, Prem Raj Dhakal, Bhanu Bhakta Sharma Neupane, Mahesh Prasad Pudasaini, Madhav Prasad Pokharel, Ratna Bahadur Bagchand, Ramesh Prasad Rajbhandari, Ramesh Bahadur Thapa, Bir Bahadur Dangi, Sharanga Subedi, Satya Mohan Joshi Tharu to appoint them to the Supreme Court and invited complaints, if any, against them.  


Due to the delay in the appointment of judges, a procedure has been made for the timely appointment. Although the names were announced according to the procedure, there has been a delay in the appointment.
