The ‘Titaura’ Craze

Everything has its own season. Let it be ice creams or the woolen clothes, the season tend to affect the varieties of flavors. However, the case is different for the mouth-watering tangy, sweet and sour foods like ‘paun’ aka ‘titaura’.

As the food carries its own unique sweet and sour taste, people habitually travel miles to fulfill their cravings. One of those is Puja Thapa. She says that she travels from Kathmandu to Bhaktapur on hearing that she could get one of the best pauns at Bhaktapur. “As summer is nearing, my craving for paun is increasing. I have long awaited the summer to try out new flavors this time,” Thapa adds.

Why titaura?
Whenever somebody is asked on why they love eating paun, most of the times, their answers simply go “for the taste”. Nevertheless, titaura is also helpful for human body. Some titaura contains citric acid which is helpful for human body.

Famous paun
There are lots of titauras that we crave for. Among Guliyo, lapsi, aap, aamala; aap is the most sold paun, says Dinesh Hada. Hada owns a paun shop at Bhaktapur Durbar Square. As asked the reason behind its popularity among paun lovers, Hada said, “Aap ko paun has been in the market for many years while other flavors have not been in the market comparatively. I think that’s the reason why people love it the most,” Hada shared. “There are people who travel and come to his place only to buy the mango-flavored titaura,” added he.
