The fall

The fall

Through the window, Suhev watched as the dark red clouds floated overhead cutting past the pink and purple sky, and allowed himself a gentle nod. He drew a heavy breath rubbed his hands as the hot breath steamed his freezing fingers. Then sank his head on the soft pillow and stretched his hands. Above him hung the heavy ceiling.

The place was so quiet and peaceful. He felt his head sinking deep into the comfortable pillow and breathe hissed out of his nose. Slowly, he felt as if he was slipping into the deepest of slumbers. His consciousness was being squeezed out of his head until his head felt crammed in numb darkness.  Then suddenly the bed underneath his back dissipated into nothing. And he could feel cold wind whipping his back.  He tried to shout but his thick tongue stayed squeezed on the floor of his swollen mouth.

Then he plunged into vertigo. Drowning, slipping, and flowing down into the sea of shadows. He screamed but his voice was lost in the screaming wind. He groped for the bed but he only hugged the chilly air. He flailed his arms and legs desperately and shuddered a thousand times at the thought of hitting the ground.

A hard claw clinched around his mouth and jolted his head towards the ground. He went round and round and round. And suddenly a strange light lit up and the rolling stopped. A firm claw dug deep into his back and abruptly he stopped. He was still but the world seemed to be revolving around and around.

There was light everywhere. He was floating in flashing colors. He felt weightless…bodiless…free. He felt free. The wind was thick and luxurious and comfortable and sometimes even languid. He felt a packet of wind hanging in his brain making him sluggish. Preventing him from unnecessary thoughts.

The flashing clutters around his eyes were beginning to clear and his head was growing lighter. He looked down and to his astonishment saw a gigantic sheet of the sea. It stretched as far as his eyes could see.  The sea was still and unruffled.  It looked like a mirror. As he descended the sea he felt a sense of fear creeping on his soul.

Above him, eagles soared on with their wide blue wings still. His eyes were fixed on the vast expanse of water, hypnotized by it. He was swimming on the brink of consciousness when a claw jolted his back and he suddenly sprang wide awake.

He was slowly getting closer to the sea. And his heart was drumming louder with each passing second. When he got to about 100 feet from the sea he noticed a slight bubble on the surface. And he felt every fiber of his frame thrill in terror.

The water bubbled, jumped and roared. Then came a sound of a heavy gurgling and then suddenly from the pit of water sprang a shark. The shark sprang putting all its energy behind his lift. Its jaw widened and its narrowed red eyes were fixed on him.  He looked up, the raven that was holding him was smiling its wicked smile, Suhev gulped. He was ready to be devoured.

Finally, he had to accept his fate.  As the shark snapped his head. He screamed and to his astonishment found himself on his bed, drenched with sweat, half out of his bed.  The shark, the raven, the eagles and the sea was all a dream.

He looked out one more time out the window. The sky was growing dark and the sun was sinking in the hills. That day, for the first time in years he decided to sleep with the lights on.
