KATHMANDU, Feb 15: Two days ahead of the general convention, top leaders of Rastriya Prajatantra Party agreed to elect Kamal Thapa as the chairman of the party for next tenure unanimously.

The RPP is scheduled to hold the first general convention in Kathmandu from Saturday after the unification between RPP and Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-N) in November.

Thapa, Pashupati SJB Rana, Lokendra Bahadur Chand and Prakash Chandra Lohani were willing to lead the party after the convention of unification but the three leaders on Wednesday agreed to support Thapa for next four years.

"Top leaders developed a consensus to elect Kamal Thapa as next chairman unanimously. All the party cadres were also in favor of a consensus between top leaders at least for a term as we are holding the convention for the first time after the unification between RPP-N and RPP," said party leader Jayanta Chand.

After developing the consensus, the four leaders issued a press release and said that they took the decision to develop RPP as a strong nationalist force in future.

Chand said that the central committee would be elected from the convention, scheduled to begin on Saturday. RPP is the fourth largest party in the parliament with 37 lawmakers.

Deputy spokesperson of the party Mohan Shrestha said that the consensus between the top leaders has set a precedent in the party and gave a strong message of the party unification to general people.
