Tarai is in pain

Tarai is in pain

Eastern Nepal is in utter pain at present due to the floods and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall.

At a time when resettlement of the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake victims is yet unfinished, another natural disaster in the Tarai region has added to the plight. Tarai is swept away by floods, claiming the lives of more than 90 people and numerous livestock. As many as 19,000 families have been rendered homeless and 53 people are reported missing.

Heavy loss of paddy and other crops has also been reported, while fertile lands have been converted with mud and flood debris. It will take a long course of time for the lands to regain its previous state. The twinge of Tarai makes everyone emotional and there has been minimal or no presence of the state bodies for rescue and relief operations.

People in the Tarai are in urgent need of rescue, relief, and rehabilitation. For now, they are in dire need of hygienic food, safe drinking water, and a place to live. Rescue management teams and concerned authorities should take immediate actions to prevent further damage. Instead of making fuss and sticking into unending political deadlock, the politicians should concentrate on the well-being of the flood victims.

It is not a time to be an onlooker, but to contribute something to protect the lives of Tarai residents. The greatness of Nepalis lies in helping each other and this may help fostering mutual understanding, lessening the gap between Madhes and hills. This might be the right time to strengthen the nation’s sovereignty. We should not shy away from extending helping hands for the support that is for the right cause. One Nepali should feel the suffering of the other.

With no sufficient disaster management manpower and equipment, it is really challenging to address the issue in due time. We always blame others for what we can do even if it is within our capacity. We often hear people charging on our neighboring country for such pang. We often ignore our citizens dying in front of our eyes due to the idiocy of stakeholders.

There are still not enough mechanisms for quick disaster response. In such situation, we have no other option but to watch the people suffer. Instead of blaming the government and politics, we should be responsible and do something by ourselves.

This is not the time to wait and see what others do. Let’s unite to support the disaster victims. Our efforts will significantly contribute during such needy hours.
