Surya Nepal to sponsor Amateur Open Golf

KATHMANDU, March 8: Nepal Golf Association (NGA) will organize the third edition of Amateur Open Golf Championship in Pokhara from March 23 to 26 under the ongoing Mountain Sports Festival. The association inked a sponsorship deal with Surya Nepal for the event on Friday.



NGA President Madhukar Yakthumba and Marketing Vice-president of Surya Nepal Buddha Singh signed the deal amidst a function in the capital on Friday.[break]



As per the deal, Surya Nepal will provide Rs 1 million to NGA as the title sponsor of the championship while NGA will name the event as Surya Nepal Third Amateur Open Golf Championship. Surya Nepal is also the sponsor of the NGA´s Youth Golf Development Program, a project aimed at preparing young golfers for the 2014 Asian Games.



The third edition of the championship will be played at the Himalayan Golf Course in Pokhara. Around 80 golfers are expected to take part in individual and team events during the championship.



According to NGA, Friendship Tournament under stableford format would be held on the first day of the tournament and a maximum of 72 diplomats and representatives from corporate houses are expected to participate in the event.



The main event of the championship will be played under stroke play format from March 24. The team winners will be declared after 36 holes while cut will be applied for qualification in individual section and the top 50 players will qualify for the final round.



Two players will form a team and their scores after 36 holes will be added to decide the team winners. Nepal No 1 Bikash Bogati and No 2 Dinesh Prajapati will represent Nepal ´A´ team while No 3 Tashi Tshiring and No 4 Bishnu Sharma are in ´B´ team.



According to NGA General Secretary Tashi Ghale, four players from India and two each from Korea and Qatar have also confirmed their participation in individual category. “We have sent invitation to all the South Asian nations and we have received confirmation from India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Bangladesh for the team event,” said Ghale.



Surya Nepal Marketing Vice-president Singh said his company was proud to be a partner of the Nepali golf tourney.



Meanwhile, a three-member Nepali golf team is all set to participate in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final to be held at the Mission Hills Golf Club, China from March 13 to 16. Sunil KC and Sangay Ongdi Lama will take part in the 54-hole tournament. Nepal Golf Association General Secretary Tashi Ghale will accompany the players as the team manager. The Nepali team will fly to China on Saturday.



KC had finished third in the Faldo Series Qualifiers at the Gokarna Golf Club in October last year in the boys´ 17-21 years age-category and earned a wild card entry to the finals. Likewise, Lama had won the girls´ 12-16 years section to secure berth in the final.
