RAUTAHAT, Oct 1: Sugarcane farmers have vandalized Garuda-based Shree Ram Sugar Mill after employees of the mill refused to implement the agreement that the mill has signed with farmers.
Farmers destroyed sofa, broke tables and chairs and shattered windowpanes. Police personnel deployed by Nepal Police's Garuda Office and Armed Police Force's Dudhiyavar Office intervened after farmers tried to set the industry on fire.
Last week, mill owner Hitesh Golchha and Sugarcane Producers Association had signed a five-point agreement in the presence of Minister for Industry Minister Nabindra Raj Joshi. In the agreement, Golchha had agreed to clear all outstanding dues of sugarcane farmers before the Dashain holiday begins. However, mill employees, who are demanding a 25 percent hike in salary, prevented the management from making payment to the farmers.
However, the mill employees agreed to implement the agreement after the farmers resorted to vandalism.
The mill owes farmers around Rs 110 million.
