KATHMANDU, April 19: A study conducted by the Educational Standard Evaluation Centre shows that there has not been much improvement in the rate of learning outcome of the students despite the implementation by the government of the School Sector Development Programme. 

As per the results of a study carried out in 2017 by the Centre under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the student achievement in three subjects of class 8 is constant as compared to the same type of evaluation conducted five years back. 

The results which were arrived at by setting 500 as the national average of all subjects that were evaluated on the basis of similar common questions, although show a general improvement in Nepali subject, the learning level in mathematics and science subjects has declined. 

As per the evaluation done by the Centre in 2013, the average learning achievement in Nepali subject was 495. The average learning achievement this time is 504. The same for mathematics subject in the evaluation done in 2013 was 508 and it has decreased to 492 this time. 

Similarly, the average student learning achievement in science in 2013 was 502 and it has dropped a bit to 499, Centre Chief, Dr Lekhnath Poudel said. 

The study report that was released today again proves that the results in the education sector do not match the investment made in the sector by the government. The main goal of the School Sector Development Programme implemented by the government with support from various donor agencies is to improve the quality and standard of the school education. 

The report released today states that the ratio of average students is higher and the percentage of weakest and best students is less. The report has categorized six levels. 
The level six is of the level of best performers. According to report, the result is 0.5 in level one, 56.4 and 0.2 percentage in level six in Nepali subject. Similarly, it is 38.8 in mathematics and 38.9 per cent in science in level four. 

The learning aptitude of girls students is better than boys. The sampling was conducted in 1,950 schools of 26 districts of seven provinces where 46,266 students were participated. 

Students' performance in private school was found better than that of community schools. The report shows that students' performance in Nepali subject in province-2, mathematics in province-6 and science in province-1 was vulnerable. 

Dr Poudel said that the performance was found weaker as teachers also do not pay enough time in class. 

The secretary at the Ministry Khagraj Baral said that the report will inspire for further research on how the investment in the sector was not achieving result. RSS
