BIRATNAGAR, July 19: Life in Biratnagar was affected for the third consecutive day on Sunday because of shutdowns called by students and transporters.

A joint students’ struggle committee, protesting the death of a college student Narvada Chaudhari, who was killed by a truck, had on Friday vandalized vehicles parked on the roadside. Transport workers have since been blocking vehicular movement by placing trucks on the road from Bhrikuti Chowk to Munalpath. [break]

Meanwhile, transport workers have called an indefinite transport strike from Sunday to protest government inaction over the killing three months ago of a microbus driver Deepak Pandey. Transport services in Mechi, Koshi and Sagarmatha zones have come to a halt due to the strike.

Morang district police said talks aimed at ending the strike have so far remained fruitless as the protestors are uncompromising over their demands.
