Special Court convicts people involved in alteration of driver's license results in 2012

KATHMANDU, Jan 11: The Special Court has convicted the then Deputy Secretary Anand Keshari Pokharel, Deputy Superintendent of Police Navraj Thapa, Police Inspector Murari Mishra and sentenced them to imprisonment and fines in the case of revenue leakage and alteration of driver's license results.

The bench of Special Court Chairman and Judge Shrikant Paudel, Judges Yamuna Bhattarai and Khusi Prasad Tharu on Tuesday ruled that the accused had changed the results of those who failed the driver's license test and passed them.

The court found the then deputy secretary Pokharel guilty in the case of revenue leakage and changing the examination results of driver’s license test. He has been sentenced to imprisonment and has to pay a fine as well. He has been sentenced to eight months imprisonment and a fine of Rs 9,000.

Similarly, the court sentenced Engineer Basudev Pokharel, Police Inspector Murari Mishra and Deputy Superintendent of Police Navraj Thapa to SIX months imprisonment and a fine of Rs 8,000 each. Ram Mani Pokharel, Ishwarraj Regmi, Shambhu Prasad Thapalia, the then branch officers involved in the same case, were each sentenced to four months imprisonment and a fine of 6,000 rupees.

The Special Court has sentenced Deputy Secretary Pokharel to six months imprisonment and a fine of Rs 7,000 in the revenue leakage case. Similarly, Dipendra Nath Yogi, spokesperson of the special court, said that police inspector Ravindra Shrestha was sentenced to five months imprisonment and a fine of 6,000 rupees.

Earlier, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) registered a charge sheet against 39 people in the special court in 2076 BS, claiming that there were irregularities in the examination for driver's license.

The authority had registered a case claiming that 1,284 people who failed in the practical examination of driver’s license were passed in the months of mid-April to mid-July in the year 2012.

Many of those prosecuted for tampering with exam results have been acquitted. Employees Dharma Raj Dhungana, Basuraj Regmi, Ratna Bahadur Shrestha, Madan Prasad Pokharel, Basudev Tiwari, Bharat Kumar Thapa, Tikaram Khanal, Bhavindra Karki, Bacchu Prasad Pokharel, Thaneshwar Dhungana, Kamal Kumar Khatri, Madan Giri, Premraj Niroula, Radha Krishna Pokharel, Satya Bahadur Bhandari, Shiva Prasad Chapagain, Umakant Brajacharya, Sanjeev Neupane, Kabita Khadka, Ranju Sen Pandey, Babu Krishna Mahat, Badri Prasad Dahal, Kosh Bahadur Thapa, Madhav Prasad Koirala, Mani Ram Koirala, Pratibha Neupane Kshetri, Raghunath KC, Ram Prasad Bhattarai, Tirtharaj Jaisi and Tulsa Shrestha Adhikari have been acquitted.
