Souls of my city: A commoner’s story

Souls of my city: A commoner’s story

In his five-decade-long life, Prakash KC has experienced several ups and downs. He travelled and worked in various places including Kathmandu, Sarlahi and Sindhuli in search of source of livelihood.  Now he is happy to run a small shop on the footpath of Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu.

He was born in Kathmandu but his family of five members migrated to Sarlahi after the death of his mother. “We were in comfortable situation until we had 12 bighas of land in Sarlahi. But our family’s bad days started after our father, a politician, started selling our land one piece after another to continue his political activities,” he said. “I got frustrated and left the home.” Then, he went to Sindhuli. After working five years in Sindhuli, he came to Kathmandu in search of better work.

But he had to work as a dish washer at an eatery for four months. Unsatisfied KC left the place but he had no place to go. He had to sleep under a Peepal tree at Sifal for two nights. When he visited Pashupatinath Temple, he decided to sell goods on the footpath. “Now, this holy place Pashupatinath helped me become who I am now” said KC. “Now I earn Rs 200-300 a day. Sometimes when famous people die I earn up to Rs 10,000 a day as a huge crowd gathers here.” Also he takes part in Bagmati Cleaning Campaign happily.

He said he has no worries now because he has bought a piece of land from his earnings. Meanwhile, his son has got married this year. “Life is a story and this may take any turn any time. For instance, what would have been my story if I had become addicted to drugs or alcohol? I am in this status today because of my decisions and the choices I made,” said Prakash.
