KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): An unidentified group on Wednesday evening detonated an improvised explosive device at the house of Shobha Kant Dhakal, an alleged mastermind of the Lalita Niwas land scam, in the Swayambhu area in Kathmandu.

The explosion has caused some damage to the main entrance of the house and a vehicle parked inside the compound. There is no report of injury. A police team from the Metropolitan Police Circle, Balaju has started investigation.

Police suspect the outlawed Netra Bikram Chand-led Maoist outfit could have carried out the blast.

Dhakal is one of the accused in the high-profile Lalita Niwas scam, in which a large area of government-owned land was unscrupulously brought into private ownership and sold to various individuals.

Police are currently investigating the land scam and have filed a case against several individuals including Dhakal.
