KATHMANDU, Feb 17: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Prakashman Singh has claimed that the new president of the country will be a candidate proposed by the NC.

Singh made this claim while addressing a program of Nepal Jaycees on Friday. He said that since NC is the first party in parliament, their claim to the post of President is natural.

“For balance, we will try to make a candidate who will be promoted by the Nepali Congress as the new president,” said Singh. NC lawmaker Singh's claim is considered meaningful at a time when there is a conflict within the ruling coalition over the president to be elected.

Singh, however, did not say anything about who will be the presidential candidate from the Nepali Congress.

CPN-UML is putting pressure on Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, saying that according to the agreement reached on December 25, last year, the country’s next head of state should be a UML candidate. However, PM Dahal’s party, the Maoist Center, has maintained that the new president should be elected through national consensus.

Singh also said that the issue of change in government is natural in politics. He emphasized that the rule of law should be maintained to implement the rights given by the constitution.

Singh said that the NC has established a democratic system by changing the system, but a lot of work remains to be done to institutionalize it. “We should consider that Nepal's politics is being focused on institutionalizing the current system,” Singh said, “Criticism is a good thing. When you are dissatisfied, you have to say what should be done to be satisfied.”

He also added that the federal parliament should enact the necessary laws for the implementation of the constitution.
