Shooting, lawn tennis teams disappoint Nepal in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Aug 20: The Nepali lawn tennis and shooting teams have continued the country’s unsuccessful run in the 18th Asian Games. 

At JACC Tennis Court on Sunday, Samrakshyak Bhushan Bajracharya and Abhishek Bastola were knocked out of the last 64 round after facing defeats in men’s singles on Sunday. Bajracharya lost in straight sets of 6-2, 6-2 against Indonesia’s Mohammad Rifki Fitriyadi, while Bastola succumbed to a 6-1, 3-6, 3-6 loss against Vietnam’s Linjiyan Trinha. 

In women’s singles category, the Rana siblings Mahika and Mayanka lost their matches. In the last 64 matches, Vietnam’s Sisila Fodor defeated Mahika on straight sets of 6-0, 6-1, while Hong Kong’s Adis Wong Chong saw off Mayanka on straight sets of 6-0, 6-1. With the results, Nepal has been dropped out from the rounds at the Asian Games.

Also, in the mixed doubles category in last 32, the pair of Pranab Khanal and Mahika lost 6-0, 6-1 at the hands of Hong Kong pair of Pak Long Yong and Ling Jhang, while the pair of Bajracharya and Anne Mathema was defeated by Hong Kong’s Odis Wong and Chun Hun Wong on straight sets of 6-1, 6-0. The men’s and women’s teams of doubles categories are yet to play their matches. 

Likewise, in the shooting category played in Palembang, Nepal took part in mixed team events of 10-meter air rifle. The team comprising of Sushmita Nepal and Sushe Chaudhary lost their matches being deprived on going into the next round. Nepal and Chaudhary made a score of 403.5 and 372.9 respectively. The total score of the Nepali team was 776.4. 

In the last round of the Asian Games in mixed team events, China has won the gold and silver medals with the record 494.1 and 429.9 scores, while India won the bronze medal with a score of 429.9.
