SEE results kept ‘secret’ to cover up school misconduct

KATHMANDU, August 9: A total of 484,278 students had appeared for the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) this time. The National Education Board (NEB) verified the results sent by 11,600 schools and published the results on Saturday.

However, Educationist Bidya Nath Koirala said that the non-availability of the results made public by the board to the media is intended to cover up the unnatural marks given by the school.

Schools are accused of giving marks to the students who studied with them apparently to show good results. The grading system started from 2015 and only two or four students got GPA 4 in 2016. But this time, thousands of students got GPA 4 and the schools are to be blamed for this blatant negligence, said Educationist Koirala. He alleged that the board did not make the analytical information public to cover up the misconduct of the schools. “Why didn't the National Examinations Board verify the results across the country? It simply means that there have been misconducts,” he opined.

This year, 8,444 students scored GPA 4. Keeping in view of the risk of COVID-19 transmission, the government had given the right to conduct, manage and evaluate the SEE examination to schools concerned. Schools, however, have been giving marks on the basis of internal assessment. “It is clear that the schools have misused the authority resulting in a sudden increase in the number of GPA 4 scorers,” Koirala said. “The examination board did not analyze the results and did not make the result public.”

According to the Controller of Examinations, Rudra Adhikari, this time there was a provision for schools to provide reasons to the examinations board if the student was given more than 80 marks. The ‘SEE Student Assessment, Publication of Results and Certification Procedure 2078’ was implemented for fair results. However, the school did not implement it. It has been confirmed that both public and private schools had given arbitrary marks to show good results of their schools.
