KATHMANDU, May 29: Nepal Army (NA) has said that the search for the Tara Air plane that went missing this morning while flying to Jomsom from Pokhara is underway.

According to Nepal Army Spokesperson Brig Gen Narayan Silwal, NA ground troops and a helicopter with rescue teams are trying to locate the plane (Tara Air). “The possible incident site is believed to be in and around Lete, Mustang. Poor visibility due to bad weather is hindering the efforts,” he added.

The twin otter with the call sign 9N-AET left Pokhara Airport for Jomsom this morning carrying 19 passengers (12 Nepali, four Indian and two German nationals) and three crew members.

The plane had taken off from the Pokhara Airport at 9:55 AM and was scheduled to land at Jomsom by 10:13 AM.

According to Tara Air, the aircraft came into contact with the Jomsom Airport for the last time at 10:07 AM.  A chopper that had earlier gone in search of the missing plane had to return to Jomsom Airport without success due to adverse weather.

The airline company has stated that choppers have been kept on standby at Kathmandu, Pokhara and Jomsom airports for search and rescue operation as soon as the weather clears.
