SC's verdict on 33-kg gold smuggling case: businessperson Golyan to be freed on bail

KATHMANDU, Aug 2: The Supreme Court has upheld the verdict of the High Court Biratnagar and ordered the release of businessperson Mahabir Golyan in connection to the smuggling of 33 and half kg of gold and Sanam Shakya murder case.

KATHMANDU, Aug 2: The Supreme Court has upheld the verdict of the High Court Biratnagar and ordered the release of businessperson Mahabir Golyan in connection to the smuggling of 33 and  half kg of gold and Sanam Shakya murder case.


The joint bench of Justices Anil Kumar Sinha and Sushma Lata Mathema ordered the release of businessperson Golyan on bail of Rs 1 million. The other accused, however, will remain in custody as the case was still in sub judice. Earlier, the District Court Morang had ordered that the accused ones would not be freed on bail. The High Court of Biratnagar had upheld the suit.

As per the decisions, 28 persons accused of the notorious gold smuggling case including Sanjaya Bahadur Raut, Tularam Tharu, Ram Kumar Tiwari, Govinda Prasad Niraula, Rajan Thapa, Gopal Kumar Shrestha, Hemanta Gautam, Sambir Prasad Tolange, Madan Silwal, Amarman Dangol and Bal Krishna Shrestha would be kept in custody.
