Almost two months after the windstorm of March 31st that hit Bara and Parsa districts of Nepal, leaving many dead, injured, displaced and homeless. Soon after the storm, reconstruction pledges were made by the government, releasing Rs. 846.8 million to the Nepal Army to build 1,453 affected homes before monsoon. The Province 2 Chief Minister Relief Fund has also raised over Rs. 40 million, and pledged 3 lakhs to each family with a deceased member.

Following the storm, several surveys were conducted by different groups categorizing the affected structures into 3 groups: full damage, partial damage, and minor damage. The lists prepared from these surveys have been changed and reduced several times already, and only recently a final list seems to be in place. The Nepal Army has begun its reconstruction work, which it plans to finish in 3 phases before mid-August.

The problems of poor coordination among the victims, leadership, and jurisdiction among the different layers of government and its bodies have only added barriers to meet the established goals. Lack of land legal papers and community disputes aren’t helping either.

Sano Paila and its partners launched its “Rebuilding Bara” fundraising campaign soon after the first response needs were met. The team, along with their partners, responded to assist authorities in the relief efforts by providing emergency supplies and mobilising volunteers. They also provided solar lamps to around 100 families, established two units of 1KW solar lighting and charging system, and organized temporary classes at three primary schools in the disaster zones.   

As  per the press release  by Sano Paila, they have raised around Rs 5 Lakhs so far from several local donors. The team  plans to use these funds to rebuild/repair several affected houses ignored in the government’s listThey further plan to take an owner-based rebuilding campaign, hence engaging the community, promoting ownership, saving time, and reducing costs. The organization will  continue to accept donations, monetary or otherwise, to rebuild homes in Bara and Parsa.
