Samrakshak, Mayanka win singles titles

KATHMANDU, Sept 28: Samrakshak Bhusan Bajracharya and Mayanka Rana respectively claimed the boys' and girls' singles titles of the First National Open Lawn Tennis Tournament at the Satdobato tennis court, Lalitpur on Wednesday.



Samrakshak overcame former national champion Kamal Bhandari in three sets after trailing the first set 4-6. He however won the second and third sets 7-5, 6-4 in the match which lasted for 3 hours 15 minutes. Santosh Khatri and Nabin Pun finished joint third.



In the girls' singles final, Mayanka overcame Ira Rawat in three sets after losing the first set 6-7 and winning the next two sets 6-2, 6-3. Mayanka with her twin sister Mahika had also secured girls' doubles title on Tuesday.



Earlier on Tuesday, the pair of Shree Ram Magar and Kamal Bhandari had secured top position in boys' doubles. 



The winners of each category were rewarded with purse of Rs 20,000 and the runners-up received Rs 10,000. Similarly, the third place finishers were given Rs 5,000 each. 



The five-day event saw participation of 90 players in four different categories. The winners were awarded by Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Choodamani Paudel and officer bearers of tournament organizer, Lalitpur District Lawn Tennis Association.   



Meanwhile, All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association also handed over rackets and balls received from International Tennis Federation to various 16 institutions for the development of junior tennis during the closing ceremony of the tournament.
